The Fellowship of Steve (Wild)

By Vicki Wild

We're fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK.

Stephen Paul Wild, my Dad, the most wonderful man in the world, died on 4th October 2023.

Dad was unfortunately diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the end of July 2023. He died peacefully at home just two months later.

Dad wore many faces over the years. A darts player, a scientist, a football fan, a husband and of course my dad.

Through all his faces, however, there was always an element of mischief to him. Whether he was annoying mum in New York, beating my uncle at pool, starting a snowball fight in the playground of my primary school (we had to have an assembly about that, so thanks for that Dad 😂), or reminding his twin sister that she was technically older than him, he loved to cause trouble.

Dad was not the first of his family to suffer from Pancreatic Cancer, his older brother passed away from it about 20 years ago. Because of this, we always thought we would be able to spot the signs quickly... but like many others Dad's cancer crept up on him, first diagnosed as nothing more than side effects of medication. It was only thanks to a lovely locum Doctor (on the 5 or 6th time of asking) that we ended up going for investigations.

By then Dad's cancer had spread and there was little more to do than make him comfortable and make sure he was surrounded by love. We spent many a day rewatching Lord of the Rings (the extended versions obviously) with Dad causing mischief from his hospital bed at home.

I found PCUK as soon as Dad's investigations started (I Google everything, I know it's bad) and we received some leaflets from the charity as well. I relied very heavily on the support pages in the days after his diagnosis and then again after his death.

After one of his doctor's appointments when he was first diagnosed, I fell over in the hospital car park. Everything I had been holding in came rushing out... on the floor... in front of a car trying to get out of the car park... it was not my finest hour. But it was the PCUK pages that made me realize that Dad was not alone, and we would get help.

That is one of the reasons why I want to help, if PCUK can stop one person from missing the new series of their favorite show (death in Paradise was Dad's favorite), or they can stop someone's daughter lying in a car park without the strength to get up and face what's coming... then I will have changed the world.

Of course, I don't do this alone, Frodo had the fellowship and so does my Dad. Together we are taking on several walks starting with Moel Famau in February and ending with the big step forward in July  (of course Tolkien's trail is also in there.)

Money is tight right now but if you can give anything to my fund-raising page you will be helping PCUK with research, support, and awareness raising.

If you cannot donate that is fine, but please do me a favour?  Can you make sure you know the symptoms of early-stage Pancreatic Cancer? It is one of Britain's fastest and biggest killers and together with our help Pancreatic Cancer UK wants to fight back... but the first step to that is awareness

My donations could fund...

50 hours with a nurse on our Support Line

or

22 hours of early diagnosis research

That’s right, Jenny is joining our adventure to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK

Welcome to the team Jen!

💜💜💜

First Adventure confirmed!

The Fellowship of Steve has its first adventure organised!

We are walking up Moel Famau on the 18th of February 2024!

This is our first adventure as the fellowship and Kara the dog will be joining us. Keep checking this page to see our updates and to confirm whether or not we got lost on our way to the top!

Money is tight right now but if you can give anything to my fund-raising page you will be helping PCUK with research, support, and awareness raising.

If you cannot donate that is fine, but please do me a favour?  Can you make sure you know the symptoms of early-stage Pancreatic Cancer?
