Pancreatic Cancer - Challenge 24

By Robert Trueman

Pancreatic cancer remains one of the most challenging cancers to diagnose and treat, with survival rates staggeringly low. Currently, only about 7% of people survive beyond five years after diagnosis. This is largely due to the fact that over 80% of cases are diagnosed too late for life saving treatment. Raising awareness of the symptoms and the importance of early detection is absolutely vital, as patients diagnosed in the early stages have far better outcomes.

Pancreatic cancer often presents vague symptoms like back pain, indigestion, and weight loss, which can easily be mistaken for less serious conditions. This contributes to delayed diagnoses, with only around 10-20% of cases caught early enough for surgery. We need to raise awareness of these signs and fund research that can improve early detection, offering patients more options.

In 2020, my Dad experienced firsthand the devastation of a pancreatic cancer diagnosis. During that incredibly difficult time, and continuing throughout my Dads recovery, Pancreatic Cancer UK provided us with incredible guidance and support. Their work is incredibly important for families like mine, and I’m committed to helping them continue making a difference.

In November, I’m taking part in Challenge 24, an initiative to raise awareness and funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK. Throughout the month, I will be walking, jogging, or cycling at least 24 miles—one mile for each hour of the day—to represent the round-the-clock fight against this deadly disease. By supporting me, you’ll be helping Pancreatic Cancer UK fund crucial research, push for earlier diagnoses, and provide the care and guidance that patients and their families need.

Please support me by making a donation. Together, we can improve survival rates and help more families get the support they need when facing pancreatic cancer.
