Paula's Himalayan Hiking Challenge

By Paula Cavanagh

A little bit about me and my fundraising challenge...

Hi and thanks so much for visiting my fundraising page.

This November, I’m taking on a 5-day Charity Challenge, trekking through the Himalayas to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK.  I will be trekking an average 15km-20km per day, reaching an altitude of around 3000m above sea level and camping or staying in lodges with very basic facilities.  The challenge will take me along rarely trekked routes and evergreen forests, while visiting India’s exiled Tibetan and Hindu communities throughout the heart of the Indian Himalayas.

I've never undertaken a challenge like this before. The longest I’ve stayed in a tent was 3 nights at an 80’s festival in Henley!  I’m not great at peeing outdoors either! 🙈 From now until I depart for India, my training will be a journey of fitness and preparation.  The trekking environment I will experience couldn’t be more different from where I live in the Fens too… At only 9ft above sea level, the Fens are the lowest and also the flattest place in the United Kingdom!

As some of you are aware, I lost my husband in 2021 to pancreatic cancer.  Having experienced what this horrific cancer does and learning how shockingly low survival rates are, this is a charity that’s very close to my heart.

It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer die within 3 months. Survival rates have improved enormously for most cancers, yet for pancreatic cancer, this is not the case.

Pancreatic Cancer UK is dedicated to taking on this injustice using every possible means. They're supporting people with pancreatic cancer now, campaigning, and funding vital research to transform the future.

The vital funds I’ll be raising will help Pancreatic Cancer UK make the breakthroughs that people with this awful cancer so desperately need.

I’m doing the challenge together with my friend Jules, who is a clinical nurse specialist, working with patients suffering with pancreatic and other cancers. She was an amazing support to me through my husband’s illness and I’m so thrilled to be joining forces with her in this fundraising challenge.

I will be partly funding the challenge myself and raising my minimum goal of £2115 through various fund-raising evens from now and over the summer.

Please donate whatever you can to help this charity provide support to people affected by pancreatic cancer, fund research into early detection, improve treatment and campaign for change.

My donations could fund...

97 hours with a nurse on our Support Line

or

43 hours of early diagnosis research

Waxing Event at Deepings Rugby Club

On Saturday 29th July, Kirk Green offered to have a full body wax at Deepings Rugby Club.  There was a buffet and music and we had tremendous about from the club members on the day.

We already had £250 pledged from he Swan Pub in Moulton who also provided the food and we raised a further £360 on the day  with some of the members bidding for strips to have a go waxing him themselves...  It really brought out the revenge spirit in some of his player colleagues!

The waxing was done by Michelle Boulton of Brilliance Aesthetics, who was sensational at drumming up the bids too.

A big thank you to all involved and all who came and donated too!

Thank you to my Supporters
