My mum's story.

In 2019 my mum, Sharon, was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer.

Her road to diagnosis wasn't an easy one, with her having to have multiple tests and hospital trips for quite some time before she was give a formal diagnosis. Unfortunately, it was already at an advanced stage by the time it was caught, which meant that the treatment offered to her would only improve her quality of life rather than prolong it. For her, this mean multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which ultimately only made her more unwell.

Throughout her treatment she tried her best to remain positive, and somewhat hopeful that she would have time to do some of the things she wanted to. However, at the beginning of 2020, the pandemic started which for my mum meant that she had to shield and essentially couldn't leave the house. As a result of this, some of mums treatment was either put on hold, or she could not have the company that she so needed in those moments to reassure her.

By may of 2020, my mum's health started to rapidly decline, and eventually she ended up in the hospital for 5 weeks for a blood transfusion due to her jaundice. In this time we were in lockdown so mum wasn't allowed any visitors and was pretty much immobile for the time she was there.

By the end of August 2020, my mum, by choice, went into a hospice for full time care, but eventually came home as this is where she had wished to have end of life care. She was at home for exactly 2 weeks until she unfortunately passed away on the 9th September 2020.  My mum fought this horrible illness for 14 months, from the time she was diagnosed to the day she passed.

I'm telling you my mum's story to show how quickly this illness can change someone's life completely in such a short period of time. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most difficult cancers to detect, and to diagnose. Had my mum's cancer been detected sooner, she may have had a better prognosis. We, as a family, were so lucky to have been able to spend precious time with my mum that some other families unfortunately don't get.

The survival rate for pancreatic cancer is so low, and that is because vital research still needs to be done and the early signs and symptoms of the cancer need to be better understood in order for better detection, and hopefully an earlier diagnosis.

So, in memory of mum, I am taking on a challenge of walking 100 miles over the course of May in the hopes of raising money for this fantastic charity. The funds will go towards creating a better future for families and individuals who are living with this disease, so they hopefully don't have to go through what my mum did.

Please consider making a donation, as it truly means alot to me to be able to raise funds for a cause that is close to my heart. It is completely out of my comfort zone to set challenges for myself, so seeing all your donations will keep me motivated!
Thank you x

My Updates

50 miles.

I have finally reached the half way point of 50 miles! The past couple of weeks have been so challenging for me, but also very rewarding. Making a committment to walking everyday for this fundraiser has made me realise how much I enjoy being out in the fresh air. I love being able to just explore and get my steps in whilst I'm doing it. Now the real task starts of getting in those last 50 miles before the end of May!

4th May

I did a slightly shorter walk today because me and the dogs got caught in the rain!

3rd May.

Went on an adventure through the woods with the pooches for my walk today. I got to 5.2km, although I had to stop a couple of times because I get reaching dead ends!

2nd May

Me and Benji walked for a little bit longer today. He had lots of fun running around the woods and then on to the field.

1st May.

Today I managed 3.1 miles, which is pretty good for my first day. I'm not used to being very active so I'm really pushing myself out of my comfort zone by doing this. As time goes on I'm sure I'll build enough stamina to walk further, but 3 miles is a good start!
