Clearwater Analytics is raising money for Pancreatic Cancer UK.
What is Pancreatic Cancer?
Pancreatic cancer is a horrible cancer that starts in the pancreas and can often spread to other organs. Early diagnosis is crucial to improve survival outcomes for people with pancreatic cancer; with one-year survival in those diagnosed at an early stage six times higher than one-year survival in those diagnosed at stage four. However, most people with pancreatic cancer are diagnosed at a late stage.
1 in 5 people with pancreatic cancer are diagnosed at stage one and stage two
3 in 5 are diagnosed at stage three and stage four.

Sadly, most people who are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer find out when it is too late due to the nature of the cancer. Many cases of pancreatic cancer aren’t detected until the cancer has progressed and spread to other parts of the body.
The overall 1-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is 24.4%, in the UK. This means that around 24 in 100 will have survived to one year and beyond.
The 5-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is 7.9%. This means that around 8 in 100 people will have survived for 5 years and beyond.
10-year survival of the disease is 1%, meaning only around 1 in 100 people survive 10 years and beyond.

Why Pancreatic Cancer UK (PCUK) ?
Research into pancreatic cancer has been underfunded for decades – it only receives 3% of the UK cancer research budget. PCUK is working on 4 key areas, early diagnosis, improving treatment and care, driving forward research in the UK, and building research capacity. All money raised will go to PCUK and contribute to their research strategy which is focused on investing in the best and the brightest researchers, tackling the key priority areas for people with pancreatic cancer and the research community.
What is Clearwater Analytics doing?
We are going to brave the Scottish Springtime and cycle along the Union and Forth & Clyde Canals, starting just outside of Glasgow in Kilpatrick at the end of the Union and Clyde Canal and then arriving into Edinburgh along the Union canal. The route is approximately 60miles in total and is expected to take the best part of 5/6 hours and is available here: Sustrans: The Union and Forth & Clyde Canals (osmaps.com).
This challenge takes a mixed ability group on a journey through the heart of Scotland (almost coast-to-coast!) and along the border of the Highlands, dealing with all the joys that Scottish springtime weather throws at us. Ultimately this will be a worthwhile effort to raise as much money as possible for PCUK!

Mason - Thank you so much for organizing. My father passed away from pancreatic cancer last year. He had been the director of the University of Virginia Cancer Center and had devoted his life to basic science research to finding cures and improving outcomes for cancer patients.
