Ride for Ian

By Martin Girdwood

Ride for Ian

Ian and I go back a long way. He was born Thursday 3rd February 1966 in Sunderland hospital, I arrived the next day, in the next bed. Although our mums didn’t know each other at the time, it transpired that we only lived a few doors away, and so it was that Ian and I became friends for life.

Growing up, we enjoyed endless days with our gang of friends, playing out and having adventures – just as any childhood should be. In the same form classes throughout school in Shiney Row and then Park View in Chester-le-Street, Ian always felt at home in the metalwork workshop. Even from an early age, he was always buried under the bonnet of a car, motorbike or anything mechanical, endlessly tinkering to get the best out of something – this would cement his vocation for later life.

It wasn’t all learning though, he had an amazing ability at distance running, regularly being back, showered and dressed from Cross Country before the rest of the class had finished! A committed vegetarian from 15 years old, in early 80’s Sunderland, it wasn’t the norm!

Putting his passion to good use, Ian started work for the Forestry Commission as a YOP (Youth Opportunities Program) mechanic at Bellingham Workshop in Northumberland, also studying at Gateshead college, always learning. Moving to Peterborough, he got his first management position at the Commission’s Fineshade Workshop in Northamptonshire. Having met Ann on a night out in Newcastle, Ian would regularly travel from Peterborough on a Friday, have a night out with us all in Sunderland at KU Club on the Saturday before heading off to see Ann at college in Carlisle, returning to Peterborough early Monday morning.

Ian was posted to Balnacoul Workshop in Fochabers on the north coast of Scotland in the early ‘90s. Helping him to move the 500 miles from Peterborough to Scotland, following his little MGB in a van, being sprayed with oil was certainly memorable!

Moving finally back to the Bellingham Workshop where it all started, Ian eventually became the Head of Mechanical Engineering for Forestry England. Quite a career for a lad that liked to tinker with cars. Ian and Ann moved to Hexham, were together ever since and have two amazing children, Meghan and Joe. I will always remember Ian as a kind-hearted, gentle person who was dedicated to his family…and his many, many vehicles.

Ian was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer early in 2020. Battling for 2 years with the disease, he died in January 2022, aged 55.

My Pancreatic Cancer UK fundraising ‘Ride for Ian’ retraces that 500 mile journey from the Forestry Commission Workshop in Fineshade, Northamptonshire to the Balnacoul Workshop in Fochabers – this time on a bike and passing via the Bellingham Workshop in Northumberland.

RIDE FOR IAN
Starting Monday 29th May 2023, myself and Max, supported by Morag and Ann will cycle between the three main offices Ian worked at:
Monday 29th May - Fineshade Workshop, Northampton to York

Tuesday 30th May – York to Shiney Row

Wednesday 31st May – Shiney Row – Bellingham – Edinburgh

Thursday 1st June – Edinburgh to Braemar

Friday 2nd June – Braemar to Balnacoul

5 days 500 miles and 26,000 ft climbing.

My donations could fund...

205 hours with a nurse on our Support Line

or

92 hours of early diagnosis research

My Updates

2 Days to go.........

I love this picture of me and Ian, sat on Mike's step, covered in liquorice!
My mop of blonde hair has changed somewhat!
We're setting off tomorrow to the start, the weather looks good all week, potential for a headwind first two days but we'll cope with that.
We'll update everyday, but thanks to everyone who has donated and given us the support for our ride.

Martin and Max

Two weeks to go!

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, we're over four times the goal, it means so much to to us and every penny will make a difference!
Our training is going well and at the weekend we cycled 130 miles from Whitby to Bramhall, 9 hours in the saddle and 9000ft of climbing.
A couple of bigger rides planned this weekend and then 'tapering' into the bank holiday weekend for the grand depart!
Thanks again
Martin and Max

Update W/E 30.4.23

Another amazing week of donations, we are already 3 times over the initial goal - thank you everyone, every donation makes a difference.
A lot on last week, my favourite mother in laws 80th birthday  and all the family travelling to Hereford for the bank holiday weekend, 11 of us in a rather large house.
Still managed a couple of rides in the rolling Herefordshire countryside, looking forward to getting some big rides in over the next, additional bank holiday.

Thanks again

Martin and Max

Training Update w/e 23.4.23

Again, the response with donations has been amazing, thank you all so much.
A good week, I managed my longest ride (ever) at 122 miles on Wednesday, followed by myself and Max riding out with Cheshire Mavericks on Thursday evening.
We both did a Max 'special' on Saturday of 103 miles based on the Cheshire 3 castles routes.
The weather didn't play ball, though, we left in drizzle and cold and after 15 miles when we seen other riders out in shorts and short tops, we realised the forecast was wrong (again)....
Onto new pastures this coming Bank Holiday weekend... more to follow!

Training Update w/e 16.4.23

Myself and Max are both amazed at everyone's generosity, we are so grateful for the support which can go towards fighting Pancreatic Cancer.
A mixed week, not too bad a start on Easter Monday, then the good old British weather took a turn for the worst........
Coupled with a few days away at the end of the week meant last weeks total mileage wasn't as high as we would have hoped, however a couple of good days in the hills at the weekend kept us ticking over.
This week I am hoping to do a big 120 mile plus mid week ride and a shorter Thursday evening ride with Cheshire Mavericks, followed by another big ride Saturday.
Thanks for your support, Martin & Max

Training update W/E 9-4-23

We are, so, so grateful for the amazing response we have had and for the sponsorship received so far, THANK YOU!
Myself and Max have ridden just under 400 miles between us this week and taken full advantage of the Easter weekend to fit in 5 back to back rides, alongside the amazing Cheshire Maverick CC.
My body, for one, now seems to be getting used to the fact that riding each day isn't that bad.
I had a little scare on Friday morning where one of Cheshire's finest potholes (there are many), in the shade, made me 'slam' the bars round and after a few hours I thought my training may have been derailed, a few days in a wrist support and it's now on the mend.
The weather is going to be a challenge this week, but looking to put a big 100 mile plus ride in on Sunday.

Thanks

Martin, Max and Morag

Thank you to my Sponsors
