My Story
This September, I'm walking 197km for the 197 people who die from Pancreatic Cancer every week in the UK.
Life changed forever in December 2019 when Dad got a call on Christmas Eve from the hospital advising him they needed to see him urgently to discuss his recent CT scan results. Three days later he got the news he had a large mass on his pancreas, and after a myriad of biopsies and scans we got the devastating news that he had stage 4 (inoperable) Pancreatic Cancer. Life, plans, everything changed in the blink of an eye.
For almost two years throughout the pandemic dad had weekly palliative chemo, often alone because of lockdown. He would always come out with a story; about someone who was worse off than him, what the chemo nurses had been up to that week or about the mushroom soup he always declined because 'who eats mushroom soup?'. Those two years were a blessing of sunny days gardening, socially distant family trips to Wales and the Lake District and many bottles of Champagne (because why not?!)
In the summer of 2021 the chemo stopped working for dad and it was really hard. We were absolutely not ready to say goodbye and neither were the family, his friends, fellow musicians, beer drinking pals and old work colleagues. On November 26th 2021, he died peacefully at home surrounded by family.
Dad was never one to shy away from a charity challenge, having climbed the Yorkshire Three Peaks multiple times, Mount Kilimanjaro and almost Basecamp Everest (which he was due to climb the week he started chemo) in the name of fundraising. Just weeks before his diagnosis he was in our local Booths playing Christmas Carols on his trumpet to raise money for charity. So it seemed fitting as a mostly sedentary (aka very lazy!) person to set myself a mountain of a challenge to walk 197km in just 30 days.
Dad would have loved this challenge and I have no doubt, after researching the best local trails for us, he would have been walking by my side for most if not every kilometre. Whilst it's just me taking on this challenge I'm doing it on behalf of the incredible support team who have been there for me, mum, Bec and Meg for the past 5 years.
Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest common cancer in the UK and yet it is so underfunded.
