I'm running 63 miles for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

I’m taking on this challenge in memory of my Dad, Dave, who loved running and was a multiple marathon finisher! Although I don’t have his natural running talents, I hope to make him proud. I will challenge myself to run/walk 63 miles in November, a mile for each year of my Dad’s life.

In November 2022, my wonderful Dad got diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. With such a positive attitude he took on intense Chemotherapy to shrink the tumour on the tail of his Pancreas. After 6 months and 12 rounds of 3 day chemotherapy sessions, he had a surgery to remove his tumour. An 8 hour surgery was able to remove the tumour from his pancreas.

He was able to enjoy a holiday to Lanzarote with my Mum where he filmed his classic vlog-style videos to send home to my brother, Will and I.

In October, the cancer had returned and had spread to his stomach. He passed away on the 4th December 2023 after a year long admirable fight against this horrible disease.

My Dad was my favourite person, his attitude towards everything was inspiring. He would always put his family before himself. There was nothing he wasn’t willing to help someone with. He loved singing and dancing in the kitchen on a Saturday morning, feeding the birds in the garden and a well-earned holiday. He was clever, kind and had some excellent Dad jokes up his sleeve. He was my go-to for advice, the wisest man I’ve ever known! There is so much more I could say about my Dad; I will hold onto our precious memories forever.

He would say to me often ‘if I’d have made different decisions in life I wouldn’t be where I am today with your Mum, you & Will, that’s why I have no regrets’.

Although his fantastic life isn’t defined by his cancer, he would still want his legacy to leave a difference for those left behind. In his words ‘take the time to contact your friends, colleagues and loved ones and ask that they get themselves checked out. The same goes to you. Early detection is so important.’

More research into Pancreatic Cancer is vital for there to be better treatment and outcomes for those who are suffering. My Dad’s hope for the future was that if at least 1 person could be saved from him sharing his story to urge early detection & encourage more funds into Pancreatic research then that’s a success.

If you could spare any money to support this challenge and donate to Pancreatic Cancer UK, that would be amazing.

Thank you all.

Love you forever Dad 💙

Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest common cancer. More than half of people die within three months of diagnosis.

Survival rates for other cancers have improved dramatically in recent years. But decades of underfunding mean we still don’t have the tests and treatments to tackle this disease. People with pancreatic cancer have been overlooked and ignored for far too long.

That’s why I’m fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK and I'd really appreciate your support. Your donations will support vital, world-leading research, ensure specialist nurses are there to take more calls and fuel campaigns to drive positive change.

Together, we will bring more than hope to people affected by pancreatic cancer.

My Updates

Week 1 Done

I’ve completed 12 miles of my challenge so far this week. I’m not a natural runner so it’s mainly been intervals of running and walking but I definitely feel like my running has improved massively already!

12 miles represents 12 years of Dad’s life, so what does this mean? My Dad was born in Singapore which was always one of his fun facts! He moved back to England before he was 1. He grew up with his Mum and his Nan, who he loved immensely and would spend summer holiday’s with his Dad by the sea. When he was around 8 years old he started supporting West Ham United (COYI). At school he was really good at maths and it was his favourite subject. Between the ages of 6-11 he would play 30 aside football matches with his friends and kids around his neighbourhood, if you can imagine how that even works!

We have so far raised almost £600 and I want to thank every single person who has donated and/or shown their support to me so far. As a Scientist I know there are so many ways research can aid in advancing treatments for this disease so every single penny helps towards a better future for those affected. I have no doubt, the selfless man he was, my Dad would also be so grateful to everyone and urge everyone to stay vigilant about their health too.

Here’s to the next 23 days of running and raising money and more importantly awareness of Pancreatic Cancer and everything we can do for a better future. 💜
