Support my challenge to fight for a world without pancreatic cancer
This month I am taking part in Pancreatic Cancer UK’s Remember September challenge, in memory of my friend of over 40 years, Paul Buchanan, who sadly passed away in March last year.
This challenge involves me walking 84km during September, this distance representing the 84 people who die from pancreatic cancer every 3 days in the UK.
Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest common cancer in the UK.
Right now, 31 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer every day in the UK.
So this month I am challenging myself to get up, get moving and walk 84km to remember those we've lost, and stand with those affected by pancreatic cancer.

My inspiration to take on the Remember September challenge is Paul Buchanan, a friend of over 40 years, who sadly passed away in March 2025. I first met Paul in the early 80’s, when we both worked for Ferranti in Edinburgh. We were both keen fishermen and took part in all the Ferranti Angling Club outings, becoming regular boat partners. Our friendship continued after we had both left Ferranti and we continued to create memories together, a lot of them fishing related. Our first trip to Rutland Water, our annual trip to the North Esk, controlling for Paul in the Scottish National Fly Fishing League and the Scottish Rivers Fly Fishing Championship, sitting by Paul’s side as he was announced as the winner of the Scottish Championship in 2013, Paul’s wedding to Fiona, watching our children grow and so many more memories. My last two fishing trips with Paul were during his cancer treatment and the memory of those two trips will definitely last with me forever. Our day out on Lake of Menteith was the best day we have had on that venue in over 40 years of fishing it. Paul was loved by everyone who knew him, had a strong family bond, was highly respected by many within the angling community and had time for everybody. A true friend indeed.
