I am fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK.
As some of you know, my Dad at the age of 61, passed away from Pancreatic cancer on the 7th December after only 9 weeks from his diagnosis. More devastatingly for him it was diagnosed on his 61st birthday. From this diagnosis of it being cancer he was already at stage 4 and was told it was terminal. It was everywhere.
I saw this cancer absolutely rip through the strongest man I know in such a short space of time. Leaving him with barely any weight, in horrendous pain and not even being able to speak. What was consistently just diagnosed as gall stones (although he did have those too) killed my Dad rapidly simply due to how hard it is to diagnose. He’d literally had cancer marker blood tests weeks before. Thankfully one doctor took it upon himself to do further tests and we had a chance to say goodbye, albeit only being 9 weeks. We know that not everyone has that option.
I have to do this because I realise I’m at a time now where it’s nearly been 6 months and somehow it gets more of a struggle. I never thought at 25, when I finished my Master’s, got a new job in the career I’ve worked towards for 10 years and when I’m just starting my life I’d be without my Dad. Although I didn’t want my Dad to suffer anymore than he had I truly believe it doesn’t have to be this way. I guess this is my way of coping and hoping that some day this won’t have to happen to anyone else.
