Why I’m fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK
Pancreatic cancer is tough to diagnose, tough to treat and tough to research. Unbelievably, over half of the people who are diagnosed with the disease die within 3 months.
On 24 January I’ll be running the Arc of Attrition 100 mile race along the Southwest Coast Path in Cornwall to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK to increase awareness and provide funds to support vital research to try and bring hope to those affected by this cruel disease.
Last October my dad was referred for a scan at the Cumberland Infirmary after his GP noticed he had lost a few kilos over the course of a year. Dad had no other symptoms, he felt fitter than ever and he had put his weight loss down to more exercise with his young pup, Poppy, and perhaps being slightly more careful with his diet.
Fast forward a couple of weeks, Dad had had a number of scans and he was told it was highly likely he had pancreatic cancer and although surgery might be possible, the nurse told us 95% of people don’t make it to surgery and he could have between just 6 and 18 months to live.
This was devastating news for us all but we were hanging on in hope that dad could be in the ‘lucky’ 5%.
Multiple appointments later, a consultant at the Freeman hospital in Newcastle confirmed the tumour appeared to be operable and exactly 5 weeks following diagnosis, Dad had surgery to remove the tumour, part of his pancreas and his spleen.
Dad has been one of the lucky ones, he’s recovering well following surgery and is awaiting a course of chemotherapy to prevent the cancer from returning. Without the proactive nature of his GP, and his awareness of the symptoms, this may not have been possible.
Please support me and help make a difference to pancreatic cancer and those affected by it.
My donations could fund...
40 hours with a nurse on our Support Line
or
18 hours of early diagnosis research
