Trying encourage my sluggish gut

30/09/24

I had trained diligently, for this hike even during all the chemotherapy sessions, preparing my body, especially my joints and heart, since last March. But in the process, I overlooked my hardworking, sensitive gut—traumatised by multiple abdominal surgeries and brutal chemotherapy treatments.

On Sunday evening, 22 nd  September, after completing the third day of my West Highland Way hike, my gut protested and stopped working.
I started experiencing stomach cramps as we were walking towards a restaurant for a meal. A few hours later, the cramps intensified, and I began vomiting. Unfortunately it meant I needed urgent medical attention. With a 9 hr wait for Ambulance I took a 2 hr taxi ride to Glasgow Queen Elizabeth Hospital ably guided by my friend and classmate Dr Kumar Periyasamy ,in Glasgow.I was diagnosed with a small bowel obstruction .
Due to this, our group of nine hikers had to split into two. My family and siblings wanted to accompany me to the hospital, but I encouraged my friends—two from Seattle and one  from Stoke—to continue the hike. They did, and I’m proud to say that they completed it.

While my family and I couldn’t finish the hike ourselves as they wanted to be with me ,I’m now safely back home after the initial treatment in Glasgow followed by treatment at Royal Stoke under Mr David Luke and Mr Veera Garimella . By Monday I was feeling well. I was discharged home ,thanks to the excellent care I received during this admission from the whole team at SAU (ward 101) and ward 111 at Royal  Stoke Hospital.

Although I  was deeply disappointed that I couldn’t complete my hike , I’m happy that I completed 40/96 miles ; I feel an even greater sense of accomplishment for having gone through this challenging journey—from the small bowel obstruction to my emergency admission in Glasgow and eventual transfer to Stoke. It was a humbling and grounding experience, one that made me realise the incredible healthcare system we have in the UK - the NHS.

It was a long but very interesting and eventful journey…. Full of gratitude for our togetherness during this journey despite the physical separations. With lots of hugs and sweet memories……….

here are some photos from the journey

Thank you all for your donations, support and well wishes.

Jumping up

22/09/24

We kicked off Sunday morning, day 3 of our journey, in invernanan , starting from the Ben Lomond Bunkhouse, where we all enjoyed a hearty breakfast to fuel our walk. From there, we set out on the trail, walking from Inversnaid  to Inverarnan covering more than 7 miles, plus an extra mile to reach our hotel.

The walk along  Loch Lomond  was absolutely breathtaking, with stunning views and beautiful weather. Despite the tough terrain, we kept going, taking in the natural beauty of the landscape as we walked.
Walking upto a pub , restaurants including all the detours we completed just under 40 miles in 3 days

Our West Highland Way Journey: 29.5 Miles and Counting!

Over the past two days, I’ve been walking the West Highland Way alongside my amazing friends and family. Together, we’ve covered 29.5 miles and tackled an elevation gain of 3050 feet over 17 hrs . One of the toughest parts of our journey so far was climbing the steep  Conic Hill but despite the challenge, we embraced the experience and enjoyed every step of the way.

Day one brought us to Drymen and on day two, we rested in Rowardennan. Today, we’re excited to continue our journey, heading towards Inversnaid . The landscape has been breathtaking, and every mile is bringing us closer to our goal of raising vital funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK.

Thank you for all your support—every donation and encouraging word keeps us going! Keep the donations coming - together, we can make a difference

Join Us in Supporting Pancreatic Cancer UK as We Walk the West Highland Way Trail!

This year, I am embarking on a personal challenge that is close to my heart, walking the West Highland Way trail, alongside my husband Dr. Sridharan, my sister Dr. Viji Kumar and her husband Mst.Sgt Franc Balderrama from New Mexico, my brothers PRSrinivasan from India and Prof  PR Sathya Narayanan from California, and my dear friends Dr. Rajanee Bhana from Stoke, and Dr. Mythili and Kat from Seattle. Together, we will be walking this beautiful 96-mile Scottish trail over 9 days  to raise funds for

Pancreatic Cancer UK

In November 2022, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Since then, I have undergone numerous investigations, multiple surgeries,  many cycles of chemotherapy. Despite these challenges, I remain determined to make a difference for others affected by this devastating disease.

Pancreatic Cancer UK is leading the fight against this illness, funding research, and providing critical support to those in need. The funds raised from this walk will go directly towards advancing research and improving patient care.

Please consider supporting us on this journey. Whether through a donation, sharing this campaign, or cheering us on from afar, your support means the world. Every contribution helps us in the fight against pancreatic cancer.

Thank you for being a part of this meaningful journey with us!
