The Final Walk - Golden Cap to Abbotsbury (SW Coast Path)

Today marked the final walk of our Challenge 24 journey—our goal to complete 24 miles across three walks in support of Pancreatic Cancer UK. It’s been a deeply personal endeavor for our family, as we rally together for our Dad, who was recently diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer.

When we set out this morning, Storm Bert was raging, and the coastline bore the full force of it. But in many ways, this grueling weather mirrored the reason we were doing this: the fight against cancer is relentless, draining, and often brutal. Pancreatic cancer is particularly cruel, with an average survival time of just six months after diagnosis. This stark reality has made us treasure every moment with Dad even more. Raising funds for Pancreatic Cancer UK isn’t just about supporting vital research and awareness—it’s about giving families like ours hope for a better future.

The Start: Golden Cap and Beyond

Our day began under heavy winds but, thankfully, little rain. The first challenge loomed quickly: Golden Cap, the highest point on the South West Coast Path, standing 191m (627ft) tall. The climb was steep and exhausting, but the dramatic views at the top made it worth the effort—despite the wind nearly knocking us over!

From there, the trail undulated across hills and into Seatown, where we got an up-close view of the raging sea. Sea foam whipped 30 meters up the beach, coating our path with nature’s fury.

Facing the Storm: Eype and Thorncombe Beacon

As we headed toward Eype, the storm truly turned extreme. The climb up to Thorncombe Beacon was the steepest of the day, but before we even started, the valley winds became so strong we could barely move forward. My sister had to hold onto me to avoid being blown off her feet. At one point, my hat flew off, and retrieving it felt like a mission in itself!

Eventually, we made it to the climb’s base. Once we started the ascent, it felt oddly comforting compared to the battering winds of the valley. For safety, we decided to bypass the exposed summit and continued on to our next stop.

West Bay: A Welcome Break

Descending into West Bay was a relief, and we took a much-needed break. We met up with Mum and Dad for a hot drink and some food to refuel. Seeing Dad there, cheering us on, was the boost we needed before heading back into the wind and, now, rain.

The path from West Bay was diverted due to a landslip, so we took an inland route through the village. It was a brief respite from the rugged coastal terrain, but soon we were back to climbing. Passing through the Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club, we couldn’t help but notice how deserted it was—no surprise given the weather!

The Grind: Burton Bradstock and Shingle

At Burton Bradstock, we crossed the River Bride and encountered a young steer sheltering near the gate. He politely let us pass after a quick head rub—possibly our most entertaining encounter of the day.

Then came Chesil beach. What was supposed to be an easier flat section turned into one of the most punishing parts of the walk. The loose shingle/gravel felt like walking uphill, draining every ounce of energy. My girlfriend Kirsty joined us at Cogden Beach but had no idea what she was in for! Progress was slow, and we couldn’t leave the beach for some time due to flooded marshland.

Finally, we found a way off the gravel and onto a soggy field, which, despite being soaking wet, felt like heaven compared to the draining grind we’d endured. Unfortunately, more flooding forced us back onto the shingle for what felt like an eternity.

The Final Stretch: West Bexington to Abbotsbury

At West Bexington, we met Mum and Dad again, and Kirsty decided to call it a day—understandably, given the conditions and the fading light. Determined to finish before dark, we pressed on.

As the shingle finally ended, we hit proper paths again—though not without some massive puddles requiring creative detours. The sight of the road leading to the Abbotsbury Beach car park was a welcome relief. Mum, Dad, and Kirsty were waiting for us at the finish line—or so we thought.

Dad, ever the adventurer, had wandered up the beach in search of us, worried we might have missed the road. For a moment, panic set in as we couldn’t see him. After a jog up the gravel bank, we spotted him in the distance, and with a whistle to get his attention, we all reunited for the final walk back to the car together.

Reflection and Gratitude

29 miles. Three walks. From Lincolnshire to Dorset. We’ve been joined by family, friends, my dog Pixel, and, of course, our biggest inspiration—Dad. It’s been tough, emotional, and unforgettable. Today’s extreme weather truly made it a challenge worthy of the name, and as I write this, I can already feel tomorrow’s soreness setting in.

We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the support we’ve received. The kind words, messages to Dad, and donations—now nearing an incredible £3,000—mean more to us than we can express. Your generosity will make a real difference in the fight against pancreatic cancer.

Dad, this one’s for you. Thank you for your unwavering strength, positivity, and determination, which inspire us every day. We hope we’ve made you proud.

With love and gratitude,

Josh and Naomi

Challenge 24 Walk #2: Exploring the Lincolnshire Countryside and Cherished Moments with Dad

As part of our Challenge 24 for Pancreatic Cancer UK, my sister (Naomi) and I completed our second walk today (15/11/2024). This time, we returned to our hometown of Lincoln to visit our parents and make the most of a long weekend together. Each step of this journey feels deeply personal as we raise awareness and funds for this vital cause—one that is especially close to our hearts as Dad bravely battles pancreatic cancer.

This walk had a different vibe from our first along the South Coast. With a damp, misty & chilly 7-degree start. We set off from Willingham Woods accompanied by Dad and our Uncle, who not only planned the route but is also something of a Lincolnshire countryside expert when it comes to walking, hiking & cycling (having won several Scouting expedition walks back in the day). Though my girlfriend Kirsty and dog Pixel couldn’t join us this time, walking alongside Dad felt extra special. He’s always been a keen walker, and his determination to keep doing what he loves inspires us every day.

Our route took us along the Viking Way, winding through the beautiful Lincolnshire countryside and passing the villages of Walesby, Risby, and Tealby. Along the way, we spotted red deer, Lincoln sheep, and even a couple of longhorn Highland cows. It felt like nature was treating us to a rare glimpse of the area’s charm.

A highlight was reaching The Ramblers Church and beacon, a peaceful spot with gravestones dating back to the 1800s. The history and tranquility of the site gave us a moment to reflect on why we’re undertaking this challenge, not just for Dad but for everyone facing pancreatic cancer.

We stopped for a short break in Tealby, a picturesque village where the community shop served fresh coffee and snacks. It was just what we needed to recharge, especially Dad, before pressing on through the damp and misty weather. Although the mist robbed us of the sweeping views Lincolnshire is known for, the peaceful countryside still made the day feel magical.

After covering a total distance of 8.45 miles (13.6km), we returned to the car for the obligatory finish-line photos before heading home. This brings our current total to 17 miles out of our 24-mile Challenge24 target, and we’re feeling proud of the progress we’ve made.

We want to extend a massive thank you to everyone who has supported us so far. Your kindness and generosity mean the world to us and to Pancreatic Cancer UK.

Know the Symptoms of Pancreatic Cancer

Because awareness saves lives, we’d like to share some important information. Do you know the symptoms of pancreatic cancer?

Tummy or back pain

Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite

Jaundice (yellow skin and itchy eyes)

Change in bowel habits

Indigestion

If you experience jaundice, seek medical attention immediately by visiting your GP or A&E. If you have any of the other symptoms for four weeks or more without explanation, please make an appointment with your GP. Remember, these symptoms can also have more common causes, but it’s always better to get them checked.

What’s Next?

We’re gearing up for Walk #3, which will take us back down south to the South West Coastal Path. This one will be our biggest yet as we aim to smash through our 24-mile target and continue raising awareness and funds for this incredible cause.

Thank you for walking alongside us on this journey—every donation, share, and word of encouragement makes a huge difference. If you’d like to support Pancreatic Cancer UK and help us reach our goal, you can do so through our fundraising page here.

Here’s to hitting 24 miles and making every step count!

Wow! Big thank you and our first walk!

The first 24 hours after posting that we would be taking on Challenge 24 in support of our Dad who recently got diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer, we nearly 10x‘d our original £240 target, and after our first walk we have now exceeded £2400.

Along with the amazing donations, the amount of kind and motivating messages have been overwhelming.

I’m so glad we have been able to have a meaningful impact for not only raising the funds for better research, testing & treatment, but also bringing much needed awareness to this vicious form of cancer and that treatment and early identification has not meaningfully improved in 20 years, especially compared to many other types of cancer.

Yesterday (2nd Nov), My sister, girlfriend Kirsty, Pixel and started our Challenge 24, to walk 24 miles in the month of November.

Our first walk was from Spyway Barn down to the stunning South West Coastal path, heading East to Durlston Country Park and Castle, this was a fair undulating route, on an overcast and drizzly day, but this did nothing to dampen our spirits and the view.

A brief stop for lunch and then we made our way back west, and eventually down to Dancing Ledge, despite the weather we saw a few climbers out on the rock. There was a tough steep climbing back up and this definitely took it out of us, but then we were back on the flat ground again and back to the car. We’d completed our first 7 miles!

So, here’s to the next 17 miles. We’ll be back next weekend with another decent walk!

The Start of our Challenge 24

Today (2nd Nov) we started our Challenge 24. We walked 7miles from Dancing Ledge to Durlston Castle and back with my girlfriend and dog Pixel

Taking on Challenge 24

We're fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK to bring more than hope to people affected by pancreatic cancer.

As some of you may already know, our Dad was recently diagnosed with inoperable Pancreatic Cancer, this has come as a huge shock for us all as I'm sure you can imagine. Right now, we are still at the stage where we don't really know the exact next steps and what that means for how long we have with him, but we're remaining positive and maximising the good times.

Of course reading into the relatively unknown area of Pancreatic Cancer, did not exactly fill me with hope, but I did come across Challenge 24, and thought, in the spirit of Dad, a hardworking, highly motivated sports-man his whole life, I'd take on this challenge with my sister (who honestly takes after him a lot more than I do in that department!).

Not only this, my wonderful girlfriend lost her Mum to this awful disease 21 years ago, so she will also be closely in our thoughts as we take on this challenge.

It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with the deadliest common cancer die within three months. That’s why they need and deserve more. More research, more funding, more breakthroughs. More than hope.

It's called 'Challenge 24'; Every day in the UK 24 people die from pancreatic cancer. This is unacceptable, so we're walking 24 Miles in the month of November to raise awareness and much needed money to help challenge this situation. We will take on several walks across the stunning Dorset coastline.

Our first walk will be a bit of a warm-up, heading to Dancing Ledge and Anvil Point on the Isle of Purbeck Peninsular. Bigger walks planned are from Sandbanks to Hengistbury Head and we're open to more ideas. We'll be wearing our Purple T-Shirts and hope to get some good pictures to document our journey.

I'd love it if you could support us with a kind donation. Your donations will bring more breakthroughs through research, more change through campaigning, and more support through expert nurses.

If you would like to support us, simply click the link below to visit our fundraising page and make a donation. Anything you give really could make a difference and help us reach our fundraising target of £240.

If you can't support us with a donation right now, we completely understand. Would you be able to share our page with a friend or on your social media instead? This could help to raise awareness of the work of Pancreatic Cancer UK, and we'd really appreciate it.

Thank you so much for your support.
