I'm fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK.
Last year, my mum received the devastating diagnosis of pancreatic cancer - a moment that changed our lives forever. Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest forms of cancer, with a survival rate that remains incredibly low. In the UK, more than 10,000 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer each year, and tragically, only around 7% survive beyond five years. 24 people pass away every single day from pancreatic cancer, with the one-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer being only 26.8%. These statistics are a stark reminder of how much more work needs to be done.
Pancreatic cancer often goes undetected until it’s too late, partly because its symptoms can be so vague. By the time it’s diagnosed, the cancer is usually advanced, leaving patients with limited treatment options. This is why raising awareness, supporting early detection research, and improving treatment methods are absolutely crucial.
In September I will be aiming to walk 60 miles in 24 days as a tribute to my mum’s 60th birthday earlier this year. While 60 miles may not seem like a lot, I am by no means a fitness fan and I will also be bringing along my dog, who is at an age now where he very much prefers naps to walks! I’m fundraising not just for my mum, but for everyone affected by this disease. The funds raised will go towards vital research that aims to improve survival rates, support patients and their families, and ultimately, find a cure.
