I'm fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest common cancer. More than half of people die within three months of diagnosis.

Survival rates for other cancers have improved dramatically in recent years. But decades of underfunding mean we still don’t have the tests and treatments to tackle this disease. People with pancreatic cancer have been overlooked and ignored for far too long.

That’s why I’m fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK and I'd really appreciate your support. Your donations will support vital, world-leading research, ensure specialist nurses are there to take more calls and fuel campaigns to drive positive change.

Together, we will bring more than hope to people affected by pancreatic cancer.

My donations could fund...

18

hours with a nurse on our support line

9

hours of early diagnosis research

My Updates

Day 29/30 I've completed the 200 miles!

Morning walk with Rocco, met  human and doggy friends 1/2 mile walk and lots of  chasing  around ( the dogs not humans!)
Walk to and through Caerleon and back  5.5 miles
Evening walk with Rocco 1 mile

Total 200 miles walked  this month.  Job done!

Day 28 - back in boots

Thankfully foot ok enough to wear walking boots again as -1 this morning. Groggy start ( Covid vaccs) but fine later.
First town walk with Rocco - 2 miles
Second walk, the 2 bridges circuit plus extra stretch  -3 miles. Note to self not to carry a baguette + shopping in the rain balancing it on a cardboard tray (forgot bag).
Third walk was Rocco's 3 mile hilly circuit, but minus Rocco as  I went via the Sixth Form parents' evening then did a 2 mile detour to add miles on way home.
193 walked -only 7 miles to go!!! Old photo -purple.

Day 27

A day of shorter walks,   Covid jab and Choir.
First walk 1 mile with Rocco, next ' scenic route' to get to vaccs centre, with elongated route home in case I'm not up to walking tomorrow!  3 miles
Next, Community Choir - simply the best! 1.5 miles
Finally, 3 miles walk with Rocco - his hilly route in reverse as  more manageable that way in bare feet and sandals - foot hasn't  recovered from Sunday's 6 miles walk in wellies because of the torrential rain.

Day 26 - Furthest yet

First  walk + Rocco - all around routes he likes - 3 miles
Second walk - bridges circuit with detour to Lidl for supplies - 3 miles, then carried it home on foot.
3rd walk -  5 miles -  home to the far end of Caerleon and back - the walk I swore yesterday I'd never do again -but with painkillers and walking sandals much better!
4th walk - Rocco hilly route in reverse. 3 miles. No idea where I got the energy from, but on a roll after walk 4, so kept going.

Day 25

Early walk 3.5 miles with Rocco, 7.30 -8.45. Was going to do the route from Saturday( next town and back) but he had different ideas and we did a long hilly walk instead.
Next walk ( just me) and did the route I'd planned for this morning  as I know the distance, 5 miles.  Phone unfixable  and sent today to insurers for replacement.  Very tired - tempted to get the bus back, but didn't!

Day 24 Storm Bert and flooding

Did a long circular route to see how far it was and Google maps say 6 miles.  Torrential rain again and wearing wellies this time as boots still wet from yesterday. Took phone for steps, tried to take photos of flood water, but now can't get phone to work. Short mile lunchtime, then pm Rocco walk, good pace, back in dryish boots, 1 hour 5 mins, calculated to 3,25 miles. Total 10,25 for a very very wet  day.

Day 23 - Storm Bert

Set off with Rocco to walk to next town - a few miles. Weather not too bad, then heavy rain started, so brought him back by bus, set off again in light jacket ( as mile-counter works in that pocket!). Too wet, so returned by bus.... and by coincidence the same driver    ( who didn't seem to notice). 3rd walk - same route and added walk around the town- in waterproofs just kept going and did there and back on foot, so clocked up 10.7 miles. Main problem was keeping the 'phone dry.

Day 22

Not as far as yesterday, but did 4 miles.
Loved seeing a seagull hitch a lift on a log and sail down the river.
Hard to take photos whislt hanging on to  an exciteable dog, poo bags, phone, dog leads etc, but just caught the shot as s/he sailed past.

Day 21

A LOT of walking - river bank and all around the town!

Day 20 - a day in 3 walks

Cold but sunny. Drove to nearby little town for change of walk scenery with Rocco and did several circuits.
Next home  again and a walk and  run with his doggy pal Ziggy. 3rd walk pm, flat and urban, just  trying to get more miles done.....then back out with Rocco!
No way I only walked for 1 hour and 40 minutes, but that's what the 'phone app says! More like 4 hours.

Day 19 - Snow!

First snow day. Rocco and pals.
Very, very cold, lost spare dog lead and phone in a field of snow... went back and luckily found it as it was still able to be rung.
Lots of urban walking after that, then more rain and another 2 miler trek on my double bridges circuit.

Day 18 Rain, rain rain!

Early walk a bit wet, then went on to torrrential rain all day.
Rocco almost climbed a tree going after a squirrel  - think he  would have if I hadn't hung on to him.
Walked 5.04 miles and got home drenched. Everything soggy  - had an extra  load of wet clothes  as the washing machine had  decided to stop working while full of water.

Day 17

Achey from yesterday, but did 2.2 miles then another 2.4, so total 10,866 steps.
Photo is an unexpected find en route hanging over a garden wall into a lane.

Day 16 - Longest walk so far this month

Early circular walk ( 2 miles) over one town bridge and back over another, a walk I did twice yesterday.

Then with Rocco a 4.5 miles walk out of town and back that seemed a lot further.
Then 2 shorter walks later took us to a total of 8.4 miles today. Logged in the week's walks -

Day 15

Half - way through the month, 17, 344 steps today, 7.39 miles. Long morning walk crossing the river at 2 points  with Rocco, surprised it was only 2 miles ( plus stop for playing ball), so re-did the walk later to check and added an extra chunk, then did  usual Rocco evening walk.
Have updated my target, so now aiming at £350.

Day 14

Early walk with a bit of jogging to try and boost distance.
Second walk was with Rocco - lots of wet grass and the boots really are waterproof!
PM  walk to notch up more miles.

Day 13

New boots and lots of singing!
Walk 1 - 1.5 miles with Rocco
Walk 2 - 1.5 miles home from lovely Community Choir
                 event.
Walk 3  - 'Running in' the new boots. All good! 2 miles
                  with Rocco.
Photo from 2022 -pup  Rocco being put through his paces by our dear old timer Eddie.

Day 12

A good hour and 15 mins walk for me first thing- more for Rocco as he also met his Labrador pal  and they raced around chasing and playing ball.
Another hour of walking this afternoon after going to buy  replacement boots.... Haven't worn them yet!

Day 11

3 miles total - long walk to sports shop to return soaking 'waterproof' walking shoes... and get refund!
2 pm walks with Rocco on drier ground.
Working out distances by sterps per minute, factoring in lamp-post stops for Rocco!

Day 10 - wet feet and lots of maths!

Long morning walk with Rocco and some doggy pals. Rocco diving into bushes and me  trying to keep track of him. New walking shoes useless - but worth miles of wet feet to notch up the miles.... to find only 17 minutes had recorded, so did second walk minus a tired Rocco and checked step counter to find it logged only 34 minutes of an hour and 20 minute walk. So.... counted steps per minute to get 120 per minute, reckoned on less on the hills ( of which we have many) and did a lot of maths to work out that altogether with a shortish Roc around the block half a mile- ish, I've walked 9.5 miles and done a reasonable accurate  20,200 steps. The blog photos are my kitchen mat when I took my new 'waterproof' walking shoes off....and some squirrels!

Day 9 of walk -aiming for 240 miles by end of month

Off to a good early start with Rocco. Very wet feet, as new, but clearly not waterproof walking shoes not coping with all the wet grass! Did a good 2.5 - 3 mile walk, then discovered step-counter hadn't recorded as 'phone in my over - shoulder bag, not my pocket. A couple of shorter walks got us roughly to 4.5 miles.

Day 8 - new target 240 miles this month. Donations for Pancreatic Cancer UK to help fund faster diagnosis and better survival rates.

Friday. Did a  5 mile walk - even though Rocco had a good 20 minute race around with his lurcher pal at the start. Lost a mile later on because I accidentally had the Pause button on the step -counter on ( didn't even know there was one!). Not a great start early Sat, as mobile in Rocco -gear bag didn't recognise steps, so will have to re-do.

100 mile November walk for Pancreatic Cancer UK

First wet day, but only drizzle, so ok.  Did the first walk with Rocco, then next section of walking was  to Community Choir and back.
If you haven't already, find your local one one and join! Even if you just go whenever you can.
Next walking with Rocco again and finally early evening walk, so some good mileage  clocked up today.

Day 5 - Bonfire Night, so got the walking done earlier!

Pleased with today's total 6.03 miles, 14.114 steps.

So lucky with the dry weather after all the rain in October!

100 mile November walk for Pancreatic Cancer UK

Day 3 and got phone working again  with step counter.
Did an early morning walk 3.45 miles  with Rocco, though will go again later.
Added a few more miles this evening - luckily Rocco unbothered by fireworks that went off sporadically. . Too busy sniffing! Today's total 5.75 miles.

100 mile November walk for Pancreatic Cancer UK

Day 2, another 3 miles. Now got the phone back from Norwich.... but got to try and get it up and running again.
Sorry if this appears twice as the one I just wrote disappeared.
Thanks in advance if you can add to the funds needed to give everyone affected by this awful disease a better chance of survival.

100 miles walk for Pancreatic Cancer

Day 2 and basing distance on known length walks as phone now arrived back from Norwich but still can't use step- counter etc as all needs to be re-set up. Arghh!!
No  walk photos or step page screen - shots  yet either, sorry! Hoping the walk will add to  much-needed funds for earlier diagnosis and better survival chance  for everyone affected by this awful disease.

100 mile November walk for Pancreatic Cancer UK

Day 1 - completed  with walking buddy Rocco. Counting steps old-style as mobile phone with steps app  accidentally ended up in Norwich ( shades of Clockwise for anyone who knows that film!)
Target of £250, but would love to raise more for seriously needed funding to early diagnose and tackle this disease.
