I am fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK.
This is a charity I hold close to my heart. I have lost two very special people to this awful disease. As most of you know I lost my Mom on 17th March 2020 and my Nan was taken from us back in 2005.
My Mom was first diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in July 2018, after fighting with all the strength she had she sadly lost her battle on the 17th March 2020. She was taken from us far too soon at the age of 54, she had so much more life to give, we were truly blessed to have her a part of our lives. However early diagnosis is particularly difficult with this disease which is one of the key reasons it is so difficult to survive. Signs and symptoms can often be vague and non specific so misdiagnosis is very common resulting in many patients not being diagnosed until their cancer is at an advanced stage - sometimes too late for surgery which is the only cure for the disease. Overall 1 in 4 people in the UK will die with thin a month of diagnosis and 3 in 4 within one year.
Pancreatic cancer is tough – tough to diagnose, tough to treat and tough to research. Pancreatic Cancer has the highest mortality rate of all major cancers. For all stages combined 91% of pancreatic cancer patients will die within five years of diagnosis - only 9% survive longer than 5 years which makes it even more important to donate to help fund pioneering research to allow researchers to come even closer towards finding the breakthroughs that will beat pancreatic cancer and to change the future for those affected. In the uncertain times we’re currently experiencing, things have become even tougher for people with pancreatic cancer.
I needed a lockdown challenge and what better way than taking on Challenge 24 at home to raise money for this vital cause because 24 people are still dying every day from pancreatic cancer. I will be running at least one mile a day for the total of 24 days. This will certainly be a challenge for me considering I have zero running experience but Im determined to do this to raise money for such an important cause.
