100 miles a month.....for a year

By Gemma Pettit

I am fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK.

In 2011, I lost my wonderfully kind and caring mother-in-law to pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is tough to diagnose, tough to treat and tough to research. It is one of the most deadliest common cancers, mainly due to the fact that often by the time it has been diagnosed, it is too far advanced to successfully treat.

I am aiming to walk 100 miles a month for a whole year to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK, with a goal to raise £1,200 along the way, which equates to £1 per mile.

Please support me and help make a difference to pancreatic cancer.

My donations could fund...

77 hours with a nurse on our Support Line

or

34 hours of early diagnosis research

My Updates

I did it!

I did it! 100 miles walked each month for a whole year! It feels like it's gone so quickly! I must admit I feel a bit lost now - do I carry on with my walking routine going forward? I'd like to think I will, but I'm also really looking forward to not having to worry about getting my miles in when it's chucking down with rain!

The very last bit of the challenge is now to ensure I collect all outstanding pledges, made trickier with being in lockdown. Hopefully the lockdown easing means this last step won't take too long to complete!

Three Quarters There....

I'd been looking forward to March and to begin with, I wasn't disappointed - the walks were certainly much drier and I even saw some sunshine... The lighter mornings and evenings just make walking much more enjoyable!

March was going well, halfway through, I started working from home full time, due to my employer's precaution of coronavirus - that was great, as it meant I could spread my walking out a bit more and get ahead of my month's target. I no longer had days where I'd only be able to do one walk after work, as I would walk before work, after work and even squidge a quick walk in at lunchtime!

Then a curveball was thrown in the guise of Coronavirus Lockdown.... Only one outing a day for excercise! No worries, I'm fairly adaptable, so I'm now getting up earlier and going out first thing before work to get my daily mileage done in one go - which thankfully I can just about do within an hour (as long as my dog, Earl, behaves)!

My morning walks really set me up for the day and so far, I have had beautiful weather. I love hearing the early morning bird song and lately, I've been able to spot themed pictures and bears in windows as well as the odd smile stone!

I'm really worried about people still not heeding advice, as I'm anxious that Lockdown rules may become stricter and have a greater impact on my walking. I really don't want to have to postpone this challenge and am still currently aiming to finish at the end of June, but I have already been wondering, if it came to it, could I get my miles in by walking up and down my stairs, or around my (not very large) garden? We shall wait and see....

Never have I been so glad to see a leap year!

I seem to have lost a blog post or two (I know I've not kept up with writing one monthly, but I've written a couple since August!). There was definitely a Proclaimers joke about walking 500 miles when I hit that milestone!

I'm really pleased with my progress so far! I was so worried about the dark, cold winter months and I think that has helped motivate me to get my miles in. In January, I hit my 100 mile mark on the 29th, so had a 2 day break from doing all the dog walks! It also gave me hope for February and never have I been so glad to see a leap year! I was certain that extra day would make all the difference.  I shouldn't have worried, I hit my 100th mile for February yesterday (26th)!!! It helped that I had a week of annual leave at the start of Feb, so picked up some extra miles early on. This time I'm not taking a break, because although I don't carry over excess miles from one month to the next, I'm also doing a step challenge in Feb to take as many steps as possible!

I still have 4 months left to go and 400 more miles to walk, but the end is in sight and the evenings are getting lighter, which certainly helps! I'm hoping they start getting drier too!

Almost a quarter way in...

So, August was an easy month for me, with having a festival in it. September has been a struggle in comparison. At the start of yesterday, I was down about 6 miles on where I ought to have been. Luckily, an impromptu Chief's game invite saw me walking from Pinhoe train station to Sandy Park and got me back on track! I'm getting quite concerned about the winter months, especially February, with it being a shorter month - there's no room for being slack!

Well done Gemma - great effort. Why do birds fly south for winter? Because it's too far to walk!
