I'm fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

This month is Pancreatic Cancer awareness month and I’m walking 5 miles a day to fundraise.

In November 2022 we lost our Nannny to this very disease. After a long struggle with her health and many unanswered questions she was diagnosed and given months to live, we got a few weeks.

Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest common cancer, taking the lives of 24 people a day. More than half of people die within three months of diagnosis.

Survival rates for other cancers have improved dramatically in recent years. But decades of underfunding mean we still don’t have the tests and treatments to tackle this disease.

That’s why I’m fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK and I'd really appreciate your support. Your donations will support vital, world-leading research, ensure specialist nurses are there to take more calls and fuel campaigns to drive positive change.

Together, we will bring more than hope to people affected by pancreatic cancer.

My donations could fund...

49

hours with a nurse on our support line

23

hours of early diagnosis research

My Updates

Day 19!

SNOW DAY!!! Woke up to a beautiful flurry of snow!
I can picture her now, in her snake print hunter wellies and her long coat all cosy and excited like a little kid!
Lots of fundraising today! The walk started by walking to the uni gym for staff VS pupils charity dodgeball for project 3850, a charity that the school works closely with a small community in Sierra Leon. The staff team lost every game but as always it’s not about the winning it’s about participating and helping others.
A walk at home to finish the miles today takes the miles total up for 105! Only 45 to go!!

Day 17+18

Well… What a two years it has been. I’ve not been sure what to write for her anniversary post but as usual I’m just going to pour out whatever comes as I sit here typing.
It’s times like this, where I’m walking to and from where I miss her most. She was the one that I ALWAYS called. No matter where, no matter when. She was always so happy to take my call, hear about my day and spill all the gossip about hers.
I don’t remember my last call with her. It was probably a buzz on the long drive home from my 1st teaching job, she loved an afternoon catch-up hearing all the school stories.
It makes me sad that she hasn’t been here to see all I’ve achieved in the last 2 years. I know she would be my biggest supporter always ❤️
I was joined by a friend in Brum today for my 5 miles. It was a lovely day for a walk and we talked about everything. The good and the bad! Talking is such a therapy and knowing that there is someone you can let it all out in front of is so important. You never know what someone is suffering through. Be kind, always.
(Ps I was lazy on Monday and didn’t do any walking! Time to go again)
I’m doing this for my biggest supporter, forever and always Nanny xxx

Day 16- the biggest walk!

14.14 miles today!
My aim was to walk 17 miles in one day this weekend as I was wanted to highlight the importance of the 17th as being the day that the cancer won.
It was an interesting walk… I saw things I never thought I would have to see.
Never take life for granted because we can loose it in the blink of an eye. I’ve always had the outlook of living in every moment, taking everything at face value and never taking anything too seriously. You never know how long you have left. Don’t like with regrets.

On a brighter note I’ve woken up the morning of the 17th feeling good! Yesterday was a great day! Good food, good weather and great fun fundraising!

We tried a new bagel place which was amazing and fuelled us perfectly for our walk!
I also had my first wet walk! The weather had truly been on my side for the last 2 weeks! And I am so grateful for this fundraiser getting me out the house. Making me have time with my own thoughts and making new memories!

Day 15

2 good walks today!
A cold walk into work and a walk around Solihull with Claire!
What a women she is! Dedicating her Friday nights this month to walking with me for this great cause!
Having people who support you is such an important aspect, especially in friendship. It can be as small as a check in text to getting involved in a fundraiser along side you ❤️

Day 14

A small day of walking today. After a busy day at work we had a night of socialising with old friends so a small walk through town it was.
Conversations regarding health are always really interesting. Everyone is affected by cancer in some way.
As we say at the dinner table tonight i realised we were talking about our experiences of cancer and illness without even realising. 2 of us with grandparents currently suffering and myself having already suffered this loss. As human we are very good at seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and not getting caught in the dark tunnel itself.

Day 13

A walk into work and a small walk in town.
Got a good laugh this morning as I walked down gooch street!
Sometimes you just need a good giggle to start the day.
Nanny was always a lady that could give you a good giggle with her worry sense of humour!

Day 12

And we only went out to get butter… walked 5.5 miles too!
Lots of interesting conversations being had lately about assisted dying. It’s something I’ve thought hard about in the past 2 years. It brings up a lot of interesting points but I think it truly is great that it’s taken to parliament and given the light it deserves to have as a topic.
It’s not something I want to go into in a lot of detail but I have been educating myself a lot on the subject.
If anyone is reading this I just ask you to think the result of this topic may have on you and those around you.
Terminal illness cannot be easy.

Day9,10,11

Day 9 was a miss match.
Started with a walk to the bakery to meet Claire and finished with a walk into Leeds city centre to the club! A great weekend overall with friends and a restful Sunday!
Day 11 a fun 5 walking the longest route to the pub quiz! Lots of catch ups with the big sisters in the phone getting all the life updates. Might be a couple of hundred miles away but always there to answer my calls ❤️

Day 8 upd8

Life ae

My motto for today

Today is different
It’s comes as a poem

We walked and talked
We really will show them

We talk and chat to spread awareness
Of the difficult times that may affect us

Day 7 - Dads Birthday

A day of celebrating! Big Linds in 60+1 today. Happy birthday dad!

Today’s blog post is a shout out to the big man. Thank you for always being my biggest supporter in what ever I do! I obviously can’t celebrate with my family today due to the distance but it makes you think of all the past birthdays we have been able to celebrate together.

Nanny didn’t quite make it to her 80th. It was all a drama before she got diagnosed. She wanted to organise it al! A dinner with her nearest and dearest at a restaurant full of family memories. When she first got diagnosed we were told not to hold out too much hope that she would make it to the February for her birthday. It was November 1st, Feb wasn’t that far away we thought! Plans were going around to re arrange and bring it forward but her health declined too quickly. We didn’t get to celebrate the big 80 with her. But we in her words gave her a “living wake.” She got to see the people she wanted to and to right the world of it’s wrongs.

Eat McDonald’s
Make us all laugh
Choose her final outfit

All of this taken in stride by the extraordinary pain in our bums that was max maggy ❤️

Day six- mile 32

32 miles down. 118 to go.
2 walks
8 miles
6:23 am. I left for a walk to work. An interesting phone call with mum (hey mum 💖) I always love starting my day with a call to my mum! Even if it’s just a good morning have a great day. Something so small can make or break my day.
Just as something so small can change someone’s life. PC is not the most common cancer but it’s what has had the biggest affect in my life.

As a family, cancer has had a huge affect on many of my family members. Be it from pancreatic, ovarian to skin cancer, it used to be something I feared. It’s now sadly something I expect. 1 in 2.
ONE IN TWO. Yes 1 in 2 of us will get cancer. Not might, not one day but will. Why fear something you are so likely to experience?

Life is too short to fear the unknown, to fear the what’s to come. Enjoy every day, do good, have fun but most of of live your life the way YOU want too 😊

Day 5 - a night of fire works

What a night for a walk, I think I was more scared from all of the exploding fires in the sky rather than their beauty! Max joined me for all 5 miles tonight. We talked a lot about “the big C”. But why the big C? Why not say it as it is, Cancer. Because it’s never going to go away. It will never change. It’s something we will always hear and be affected by.

On a brighter note, max was really pushing for me to explain why I dislike running so much. I came to this conclusion. When I run I don’t feel there is a purpose.
Team sports: I’m doing it for my team mates.
Teams fitness: I’m doing it to improve myself so in turn I can help the team.
This: I’m doing it for nanny, and anyone who is and will live and die with this disease.

Day 4, a walk with my thoughts

After what can be described as a stressful evening this is exactly what I needed! 1 and a half hours of my and my thoughts. Tried a different route and had fun people watching. I will never understand how people really enjoy running! But whatever keep you healthy!

Day 3- friends and family

Today was the first day I’ve broken up the 5 miles. 3 miles playing frisbee with friends then 2.5 night time walk with max. Again discussing the effect of cancer on us as individuals. Continue to talk, trust in those around you. The more we talk the more we learn and the more we educate! Your fact today- pancreatic cancer is the 5th biggest cancer killer in the uk. It takes the lives of around 10,000 people a year.

Day 2- with Rachel

Day 2 was a good one. I started by walking into kingsheath to get some brunch food for Rach and I. A leisurely 2 miles… then the hard bit hit. Rachel and so choose to do a bit of running. I don’t run. But I was really proud of myself as I managed to run for 2.5 miles of the remaining 3! We had some really good conversations about cancer and the effect it has on us and those around us. 1 in two of us will be directly affected by cancer. This is a crazy statistic. I said to Rachel I try not to dwell on this fact, live in ever moment, take every day as it comes and don’t take life too seriously. We only have 1 and you never know what’s around the corner. Thanks again for all the donations 💖

Day 1!

Finishing where it began- nanny’s flat

Day 1. When 5 miles is actually 6!

Started today walking up Falkirk and finishing at my wee nanny’s flat where all this crazy sh*** happened! Almost 2 year to the day of diagnosis what a time to fundraise! I listened to a great podcast on my walk.
It just highlight the lack of progression for this type of cancer research. It’s mostly down to late diagnosis like the case of my nanny. I’m feeling very good about the things I’m doing to educate myself and will share all that I find out along this journey! Thanks to everyone who has donated so far! It’s so very appreciated xxx
