Erica’s Sewing Stash Challenge

By Erica Martin

I'm fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK.

Two years ago, I lost my mom to pancreatic cancer. From her first diagnosis, her chances of survival were extremely slim, as they are for most people who develop this disease. I’m fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK in the hopes that one day, more people have the chance to survive a pancreatic cancer diagnosis.

My mother was a great knitter, and just before her diagnosis, she was starting to get back into sewing. This inspired me to take up sewing again (I did it as a teen), and I’ve been doing it for over a year now.

My challenge this month is to sew my way through my stash of scrap fabric, which is pretty considerable! I’ll make quilts, cushions, maybe stuffed animals? Who knows! And everything I make will be donated to palliative care facilities.

Please donate to help fund essential research. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most painful, deadliest common cancers,  and is extremely hard to treat. With your help, we can make a difference.

A word from Pancreatic Cancer UK:

We go above and beyond for everyone affected by this disease. Right now, half of people with pancreatic cancer die within three months of diagnosis. Families are left with only hope to hold onto. They need more. So, we do more.

We bring more breakthroughs through research, more change through campaigning, and more support through our expert nurses. We make more noise because people have gone unheard. We are relentless because the disease is ruthless. We care more because people feel forgotten.

My donations could fund...

24 hours with a nurse on our Support Line

or

11 hours of early diagnosis research

My Updates

Challenge complete!

November is over which means my fundraiser has come to a close. I didn’t make it all the way through my stash, but I made use of the bigger pieces, and the rest I’ve organised by colour and size to eventually make a quilt for donation. I made 4 syringe driver bags and 6 drawstring bags for donation, and a little sewing clip bag for me (it’s already made sewing a lot easier!).

Thank you to everyone who donated! Your support means a lot to this cause, and I know it would mean a lot to my mom.

Please consider doing a regular donation to Pancreatic Cancer UK to fund life-changing research and support for cancer patients.

Syringe driver bag

These were also a recommendation from the Project Linus rep. I know palliative care teams and hospices are always needing them so I have a feeling I’ll keep sewing these even after the challenge is done.

Another drawstring bag!

My Project Linus rep told me these bags are useful for toiletries and plus they’re great for using up scraps. This material is very satiny so feels quite luxurious!

More bags!

Fun fact, these ribbons were holding together offcuts of fabric I bought many months ago. Reduce, reuse etc!!

First projects done!

Thank you so much for your support thus far. What an incredible response in only a few days!

I’m pleased to report I’ve finally finished my first few projects. The first several days of the challenge were spent organising material into colours and sizes, pressing and cutting. I’ve now made 3 small drawstring bags (my first time doing them!), which I’ll be donating to hospitals and hospices via the Linus Project.

I’ve still got a huge pile of scraps to make my way through but getting these first 3 projects done has really inspired me! And I know my mom would be proud <3
