500 miles for Dot

By Claire Sutherland

500 miles to walk, 100 days to do it!

I'm fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK in memory of my mother-in-law Dot. Sadly, Dot passed away earlier this year shortly after receiving a pancreatic cancer diagnosis.

I have set myself a challenge to walk/hike/jog 500 miles in 100 days this summer.

I plan on doing lots of hikes & walks around Orkney to get to the total of 500 miles by the end of the challenge.

The challenge starts on 11th May and will end on 19th Aug, the total mileage will be collated from the daily total on my Apple Watch.

My donations could fund...

20 hours with a nurse on our Support Line

or

9 hours of early diagnosis research

My Updates

543 miles done (in 96 days!)

Surprisingly I managed over my 500 mile target 4 days early, with the finale of hiking up Cuilags on Hoy, round to the Old Man and back to Moaness. It was brutal & I was literally crawling on my hands and knees to get to to the summit it was that steep.

440 miles completed, 60 to go...

had a couple of weeks just doing local walks in the evenings due to the kids being on holiday, we went to Sanday and I managed to rack up the miles here. Cannot believe I have just over 3 weeks to go to complete the challenge and just 60 miles to go... have a couple of big hikes planned... watch this space!

weekly round-up: week 9

just about 45 miles achieved this week, this included walking the Parkrun on Sat for the 75th NHS anniversary where I was pretty chuffed with my 9min 40 sec walking pace, and a 16km hike today from Skaill to Stromness. Just under 150 miles to go with 41 days until the end of the challenge!

weekly round-up: week 8

a quieter week mileage wise due to husband working away, the kids breaking up for the school holidays, life was a bit hectic with not much time to dedicate to official walks. Managed a walk round Inverness on Sunday morning before the heavens opened, which brought my weekly total in at 39 miles, and the grand total as of yesterday evening to over 310 miles. Feeling confident 45 days to go ...

a week of half ways: week 7

this week has seen:
* over half way in miles - total of 271 out of 500 miles so far
* over half way in donations - total of £278 raised so far aiming for £500

with 55 days left to complete this challenge feeling confident with lots more big walks planned...

most miles yet: week 6

this week I have walked over 50 miles, that's a grand total of 224 so far, I have managed 5 walks/hikes which the glorious weather helped to make it so much easier to achieve.

week 5: sick bug 1 - walks 0

was unable to get out for long walks last week due to one thing and another, then a sick bug struck me down on Thursday, so took it easy. Anyway back on it this week with over 17 miles completed already and it's only Tuesday!! Plans to complete a segment of St Magnus Way on Sunday so watch this space for updates...

weekly round-up 28/05

it has been a slow week due to life happening but although I haven't managed any epic walks I am pretty pleased with my progress as have totalled just over 95 miles so far...

Loch of Ayre walk

after tea walk with Innis, so he can get km points for 'get oot & get gaan'

Weekly Round Up

61 miles walked & hiked so far 11 days in

Yesnaby & the castles

hiked to North Gaulton Castle today from Yesnaby & back. The castles are sea stacks not castles, and North Gaulton is the one they parked a car on in the 90’s for an advert, like you do! Spectacular cliffs on this walk, it was really enjoyable.

Thank you

Thank you to everyone who have donated so far, it is very much appreciated. Time to plan this weeks miles…

Around Rousay

13 mile walk today around Rousay, which included Orkney’s highest road, felt like it walking up it 🥵 thanks to Nikki who accompanied me. The last 3 miles were brutal but we made the boat just in time !

1st day of challenge

Just over 5 miles completed in total today … 495 to go 😆
