My Updates

We did it!

Thank you everyone that turned out to support, to everyone who has made a  to those who have left words of encouragement. Of course most thanks need to go to Vicky, who has put up with me for hours on end through the 12 week training period and for hours on the day! We chatted the whole way round the course - even up the hills. I was very slow, but made it across the finish line still upright. My knees buckled once at about mile 12 but I managed to persuade them to keep going. I've never been so pleased to see Priory Park as I was when we turned the final corner! Would I do another? Probably.

One week to go!

It's almost time. I picked up my number this week and had a nice chat with yhe guys in Andrews where they were handing them out.

This penultimate week of training has been rather testing due to the hot and humid weather. As much as possible we've tried to get out early to avoid the rapidly rising temperatures. It has become increasingly tricky as our legs are really feeling the training, and the relentless high temperatures are making decent sleep difficult to bag. Our last long run today went pretty well, I even managed to defeat the hill heading south out of Redhill, for the first time. We were scheduled to do 9 miles but did a mile or so less due to route execution errors 😄. Two more short runs before the big one. See you there?!

Are we nearly there yet?

Vicky has just reminded me to update this as it was last done during Week 5. It's now the end of Week 10. Time flies when you're having fun! Or that should probably say - Time flies when you're having to run!
Two weeks to go until the big day. I do feel prepared to some extent, but the last 2 weeks doing 10 mile runs has been pretty hard. I've experimented with gels and think we've worked out what I need (apart from new legs at about 10k).
Thanks to everyone who has donated so far, and to those who've said they'll come out and support us. It's really appreciated.
Oh, and if you see the "legendary local celebrity" - Vix - out and about, congratulate her on making me get out early in the morning before it gets warm, before coffee, and before I'm able to communicate beyond a couple of mumbled words!
I'll try and remember to update this again before the 17th!

Cheers,
Caroline

Training - getting the miles in

We've just started Week 5 of training. MIleage per week increasing. Each week so far we have done a solo run, a social run and parkrun (where possible). I have had to do a couple of treadmill runs whilst on holiday as it was way too hot to venture outside. Even pounding the streets of Redhill and Reigate has been quite hot and sweaty! This week the aim is to get 16 miles done. I've got new trainers to spur me on! Coach Vicky continues to do a good job of getting me out and extending my distances, This week I am feeling pretty tired.
Please donate!

Why are we doing this?

I am supporting Pancreatic Cancer UK in memory of my mum Maureen, who died from pancreatic cancer in 2021 only a few months after diagnosis. I also lost a friend - Brenda - to the disease last year.

Running a half marathon seems a bit mad, but Vicky is running with me to support both me and this charity - and to try to ensure I finish! Although she has said she won't carry me over the finish line.

Pancreatic Cancer UK are the only UK charity dedicated to taking on the injustice of pancreatic cancer by using every possible means. They're supporting people with pancreatic cancer now, campaigning, and funding vital research to transform the future.

Currently survival rates are very low and much more funding for research is needed.

Help us make the breakthroughs that people with pancreatic cancer so desperately need.

Thank you,

Caroline (and Vicky)
