Swimming 24 km during November in memory of my Dad - Roy Doughty

I'm fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK.

When my Grandma (aged 83) was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in 2013 and told she had less than 6 weeks left to live, she said to me that she wasn’t ready to die just yet. I found this so unbelievably sad and I thought I hope no one else I know ever gets Pancreatic Cancer.

Fast forward to 9 years later and my lovely Dad, who I adored, passed away from it aged 63 years old. It was so quick he found out he had cancer and then was no longer with us 2 weeks later. My heart was and is still broken.

Tommys wonderful Grandad Laurie (aged 75) only lived 6 weeks and 4 days once he was diagnosed.

This November is Pancreatic Awareness month and also the month my Dad passed away (3rd November 2022 at 12:58).

24 people a day in the UK pass away from Pancreatic Cancer.

For this reason, I’m committing to swimming 24 km over the course of November in memory of my Dad, Grandma and Tommy’s Grandad Laurie.

However, some other statistics I want everyone to think about when considering whether to donate and why I think pancreatic cancer is one of the cruellest cancers of them all:

> Survival for pancreatic cancer has barely improved in the last 45 years

> 7 out of 10 people never receive any form of treatment for Pancreatic Cancer (not even chemotherapy) once diagnosed

> Only surgery can cure pancreatic cancer but 9 out of 10 people are diagnosed too late for this to be an option

> Over 50% of people pass away within 3 months

Please give what you can <3

Lily I’m so sorry to hear about the losses that you, Tommy, and your families have suffered. It is an amazing achievement to raise so much for a charity so close to your heart and you will look back with such pride at what a difference you have made to so many people and their families. I’m sure those you’re raising money in memory of would be just as proud of you too.
